Discovr New Music

The Discovr app is great for finding musical relatives to artists that you already love. The app opens with a search box. Once you fill that in, you are presented with that band or artist in a circle.
Tap that circle once and you get a group of related artists.

Depending on what gesture you use on that circle, you can see related artists of the related artists, add an artist to your favorites, open an artist in Spotify, or see more info about the artist including bio, songs, videos, blogs, reviews and links.

Tap and hold and get more options quickly.

This is what I love about this app. I like Trombone Shorty and by doing a search on him, I found The Soul Rebels. They are a brass band from New Orleans that I’m now happily listening to.

And one more because a brass band cover of Sweet Dreams? Yes please!

The iPad has enough room to show you most of the information at once if you use landscape.

The iPhone has tabs across the bottom to get you to the same info.

I especially like the top songs options. You can listen to some samples to quickly hear whether the group is going to be your new favorite or not and whether you want to scroll down and listen to some of their other cuts. Sharing and buying is easily done.

Milan Turkovich fail - iPhoneAs you might imagine, Discovr is great with popular music. Not always so great with some classical music and composers. Putting in Milan Turkovich, a well known bassoonist, actually brought up this random thing about sour cream. No, not some new group specializing in recent music. The biography to this looked like a Wikipedia article on. . .sour cream, actual sour cream. . .delicious on tacos but not for bassoons.

Discovr does do a relatively good job with composers though it struggles a bit with the more recent composers.

This app can definitely be a time suck but the physics of it is fun and the ability to instantly listen to music samples and learn about new artists and groups that you may love, is well worth the procrastination risk.

Discovr is a plus app though it is more fun to explore on the iPad in my opinion.
Discovr is $3.99 in the iTunes store.

There is also a Discovr app for use on your Mac for the same price.

The Discovr app is from David McKinney. He also has Discovr apps available for finding related Twitter folks, movies and apps.
